Zululand Postal History and maps

Zululand was an independent kingdom from 1816. Following the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 the British exiled the Zulu king Cetshwayo and divided Zululand into 13 regions, each administered by a kinglet. With continuous strife in the area the British decided to annexe the territory and declared it a Crown Colony on 19 May 1887. Zululand remained a separate colony for ten years before again becoming part of Natal on 31 December 1897.

Stamps of Natal were used in Zululand till 1 May 1888 when stamps were issued for the Colony. Following Zululand's annexation by Natal on 31 December 1897, Zululand stamps were withdrawn on 30 June 1898.

The first post office was established in Eshowe in 1887 and Entonjaneni followed in 1888. Further post offices were established from 1890 onwards.
