This page shows the various Zululand postmark types, information about them, and which post offices they were assigned to. Previous authors have used other groupings and at the bottom of each individual post office page I list these. The illustrations shown here are taken from Davis and Joseph.
Type Z1
A double circle postmark with the post office name at top and the date in two lines. Used at Eshowe
Type Z1
Type Z2a
A triple circle postmark (37 mm, 35 mm and 25 mm in diameter) consisting of a double circle with the outer circle being itself double with 'Nkandhla' and 'Zululand' in 3 mm high non-seriffed lettering within the circles and the day-month-year in the centre on one line and the year date consisting of the last two figures only. Two Maltese crosses are in the centre of the circles on either side. Used at Nkandhla
Type Z2b
A triple circle postmark with the post office name at top and Zululand at bottom separated by 2 dots within the circle with the date in one line bordered by two straight lines. Used at Rorke's Drift
Type Z2c
A triple oval postmark with the post office name at top and Zululand at bottom separated by 2 dots within the oval with the date in one line bordered by two stylised lines. Used at Nondweni
Type Z3a
A single circle postmark 24 m in diameter with 'R. M. Office' at top and the post office name at bottom in 2 mm high non-seriffed lettering with the date in three lines in the centre with the day at the top in heavy type, the month below and the year below that. Struck only in purple. Used at Hlabisa and Lower Umfolosi
Type Z3b
A single circle postmark 25 mm in diameter with the post office name at top and Zululand at bottom in non-seriffed letters 2.5 mm high and struck in purple with the date in three lines. Used at Ingwavuma, Lower Umfolosi, Nongoma and Ubombo
Type Z3c
A single circle postmark with the post office name at top and Zululand at bottom separated by 2 dots within the circle with the date in three lines. Used at Ulundi
Type Z3d
A single circle postmark with 'Post Office' at top and the post office name at bottom with the date in three lines. Used at Qudeni
Type Z4a
A double circle postmark with the outer circle varying from 24.5 to 27 mm in diameter and the inner circle from 15 to 16 mm with the post office name at top and Zululand at bottom in 3 mm high non-seriffed lettering (the lettering is slightly larger in in the 27/16 mm double circle) with the date in two lines with the month and day in the centre and the year underneath with only the last two figures given. Used at Eshowe, Melmoth (26 x 16 mm), Nondweni (26 x 15 mm) and Nqutu (24.5 x 16 mm).
Type Z4ab
A double circle postmark with the post office name at top and Zululand at bottom with the date in two lines and a code letter A or P in the line above. Used at Eshowe
Type Z4b
A double circle postmark with the outer circle varying from 24.5 to 27 mm in diameter and the inner circle from 15 to 16 mm with the post office name at top and Zululand at bottom in 3 mm high non-seriffed lettering separated by 2 dots within the circles with the date in two lines with the month and day in the centre and the year underneath with only the last two figures given. Used at Lower Tugela (26 x 15 mm), Nkandhla (25 x 15.5 mm), Rorke's Drift and Ulundi
Type Z5
A single circle postmark 30 mm in diameter with 'Post Office' at top and the post office name at bottom in 3 mm high non-seriffed capitals with the date in one line and the year date consisting of the last two figures only. Used at Entonjaneni
Type Z6a
A single circle postmark with post office name at top and Zululand at bottom with the date in two lines. Used at Eshowe
Type Z6ab
A single circle postmark with post office name at top and Zululand at bottom with the date in two lines and Code A in the line above. Used at Eshowe
